We are too over reliant on technology
Introduction:
Technology can
be described as computerized devices used to process or store information and
are used by almost everyone in their daily lives. We have become too reliant on
technology that it has affected the way we think and act without machines. This
blog essay will firstly discuss the over reliance of technology for health care
delivery; Secondly, the reliance of global positioning systems; thirdly, the
over dependence of technology by society lastly, a conclusion will be made as
to why we are too reliant on technology.
Health Care Delivery:
Technology
that’s been used in health care departments have been designed to enhance the
activity done by workers and can decrease the performance or overall skill when
it comes to patient care without technology. Healthcare delivery systems has
become too reliant on technology that they use technology in almost every
aspect of patient care; there are machines that cover almost every activity
that’s been done by the workers. What will happen if technology is unavailable
or inaccessible? System Downtime is a term used to describe this. Situations
like this can “Create a real fight at times to get work done, because people
are always in need of a computer” (Emily M. Campbell, 2007) and cause workers
to become frustrated which decreases their functional abilities to find another
way to solve a problem. Furthermore, hospitals are so complex if a single
machine or component goes downtime it will affect other important areas of the
hospital risking the health and safety of patient. Clinical workers have become
too reliant on the information about a patient that’s been stored on machines
not knowing if the information is accurate or true; this can jeopardize the
safety of patients.
Global Positioning System:
“Global
positioning system” is space based technology which is used to navigate where
someone is or if a destinations needs to be reached by using electronic maps;
this is very useful when people are lost anywhere and can use the map for
directions. Global positioning systems have been first used and trusted by the military
which makes people become over dependent on them. In addition, Police and
ambulance also use global positioning systems to find the quickest route to an
accident saving more time and providing patient care as soon as possible this is
very important for them. Despite the importance of global positioning systems
there are also downsides to using them. A disadvantage about global positioning
systems is that new roads and places are being built and could affect placing’s
on the map but this depends on how old or out dated the device is. If a person
is lost somewhere global positioning systems should be used as a “navigation
aid” and people shouldn’t become too reliant on because there has been cases
that has resulted to deaths. “The manufacturers of navigational devices quietly
note that all databases contain errors, and therefore insist that their
products are to be used as ‘navigational aids’ only” (Gregory McNamee, 2013). There
is also human – caused global positioning system failure; Criminals can deliberately
jam or block global positioning systems when the theft of something is taking
place, which decreases the effectiveness that global positioning systems have.
Society:
Technology isn’t
just a workplace or machine used to browse or store information; it has become
part of our modern lives. With all the different aspects of technology and the
internet it has made life much easier “The computer is becoming addictive to
people. There are people, living all over the world, that can’t just finish a
day without sitting in front of computer” (BIG ISSUES, 2013). We can use
technology to virtually communicate with each other online which is called
social networking an example of this is face book. We can also use technology
to browse information when needed; mainly for students because they need it for
education purposes like browsing information for assignments. In addition,
computers provide us with Microsoft office which helps students with
assignments using Microsoft word which allows us to type information on and
also Microsoft Power point for presentations and speeches. Another advantage of
over dependence on technology is that it allows us to purchase almost anything
online and will get shipped to your door; this takes away the whole point of
going to the shop in real life because this is a more easier way to purchase
items and people would chose this option instead of going to the shop. Despite
these advantages, spending too much time on technology can affect society as a
whole because it makes people to lazy to do anything. Most modern technology is
taking over most jobs leaving a decent amount of people unemployed. In
addition, technology is taking over the use of many aspects, there is no point
of going to a library for information anymore because computers and internet is
almost anywhere and can browse information just by clicking a button. Some
people abuse the internet by downloading pirated games or movies which destroys
the whole point of going to a cinema and can cause the company to lose money.
Conclusion:
In conclusion
to technology being too reliant on by health care delivery systems, people too
dependent on navigation systems and how technology and the internet has affected
society as a whole. I believe that technology is too reliant on because as we
know technology makes life easier in many ways; more and more technology is
being invented that takes over most jobs which can increases the unemployment
rates. As we know technology isn’t perfect so errors and mistakes can occur and
can jeopardize the safety of everyone especially navigation systems.
